about
San Ramon Canton

Investment Opportunities

("City of Poets" and the second most important canton in the province of Alajuela)

Why San Ramon?

San Ramón is not only a city full of history and culture, but also a strategic transit point between the Pacific and the Central Valley. Located on Route 1 (Interamericana), an hour from San José and 45 minutes from Puntarenas, it has a stable economic potential and active communities that support local businesses.

An important detail:

The people of San Ramón are cooperative, with a strong community spirit. An investment that respects local values and contributes to sustainable development is well received.

What types of investments are promising here?

San Ramón is not just a place where you see clean streets, flowers, and welcoming people – it’s a constantly expanding canton, with a rare combination of decent urban infrastructure, strong traditions, and a clean, small-town air.

Agrotourism & ecotourism – The countryside is rich in coffee plantations, mountainous landscapes and diverse microclimates. More and more tourists are looking for authentic experiences: ecological cabinas, coffee tasting tours, guided nature walks, or accommodation on local farms.

Education & vocational training – As a university city (hosting an extension of the Universidad de Costa Rica), there is demand for alternative courses, technical training, English language centers, and coworking spaces.

Real Estate – Many families are looking to retreat from the capital to quieter areas. There are opportunities for small residential projects or renting cabinas/homes to teachers, students, and tourists.

Agriculture & handicrafts – San Ramón has a tradition in the production of high-quality coffee, vegetables and flowers. Cooperatives, collection centers, or stores that sell organic products directly from the producer can be developed.

Health & wellness – Surrounding communities have limited access to specialized medical services. A small private health center, pharmacy, alternative therapy or wellness spa would be welcome.

Small-scale technology – For those who work remotely or want to develop small tech startups, the area offers a quiet life, low costs and decent internet connection.

Real estate sector in San Ramón Canton

San Ramón is a more discreet gem in the province of Alajuela. Located about an hour from the capital and about the same distance from the beaches (Pacific), the canton attracts both locals and expats looking for a quieter place, but with all the essential services close by.

Key areas of interest

  • San Ramón Center: suitable for small businesses, apartments, clinics, offices or restaurants. It is an active area, but with a small town vibe.
  • San Juan, Concepción and Santiago: rural or semi-urban areas in expansion, with lots of available land and mountain views.
  • Volio, Alfaro, Peñas Blancas: ideal for ecotourism projects or nature retreats (especially for foreigners who want “green” and tranquility).
Real estate opportunities:

  • Land for vacation homes or “tiny homes” in areas with a pleasant climate
  • Ecotourism cabins or “spiritual retreats” near mountains and forests
  • Rental for teachers, doctors or students, thanks to the presence of the University of Costa Rica (local headquarters UCR)
  • Small commercial projects: office spaces, lounges, family restaurants
To remember

  • Check the property title carefully (deed vs possession).
  • It’s a canton with a slower pace, but growing. It’s not the hustle and bustle of Alajuela, but that’s exactly what makes it so attractive.
  • Prices are more affordable than in the metropolitan area, but with good potential in the medium term.
  • The infrastructure is decent, and the climate is one of the most balanced in all of Costa Rica (neither too hot nor too humid).

Safety in San Ramón Canton

In the first 5 months of 2025, 198 crimes were registered in the canton of San Ramón.

The most common are simple thefts and robberies, but there is also a lack of burglaries and vehicle thefts.

Official data from the OIJ shows:

  • Simple theft – 74 cases
  • Robbery – 58 cases
  • Vehicle theft – 25 cases
  • Aggravated theft – 23 cases
  • Vehicle theft – 12 cases
  • Homicide – 6 cases
🔴 High-Risk Areas
  • San Ramón City Center
  • Alfaro District
  • Ángeles District
  • Piedades Sur District
Significant reduction in crime compared to the same period in 2024.

🟡 Note: although the atmosphere is calmer than in Alajuela, peace should not be confused with total safety. Central areas, bus stations and crowded parking lots can attract pickpockets or opportunists. In high-risk areas, it is best to avoid traveling at night and not leave things in plain sight in your car. Calm caution, without paranoia — but neither is naivety.

Personal Observations

San Ramón is for more settled souls. If you don’t like the hustle and bustle of the city and want a place with good coffee, green hills and people who say “buenos días” to you with a smile, this is the place. It always gave me the feeling of a big village, where life flows a little slower. At the same time, the university and cultural activities make it not cut off from the world.
