San Ramón is not just a canton with green landscapes and clean air, it is a place with a deep soul, also known as the “Ciudad de los Presidentes y Poetas” (City of Presidents and Poets).
It’s cooler than the rest of the province and has a university town vibe, but with a village soul.
Number of districts: 13
Capital: San Ramón
Average altitude: 1,057 m
Climate: cool and humid (mountainous area)
– San Ramón – administrative center, with university, hospitals, parks
– Los Ángeles and Piedades Norte/Sur – quiet residential areas
– Peñas Blancas – gateway to the tourist area of La Fortuna/Arenal
– Alfaro – rural, with beautiful scenery
Agriculture, coffee, local trade, rural tourism
Average, but stable. It has hospitals and a university.
Medium to high.
Excellent for simple, rural, yet civilized living. Warm community.
Much loved by more “mature” expats.
The people of San Ramón are cooperative, with a strong community spirit. An investment that respects local values and contributes to sustainable development is well received.
San Ramón is not just a place where you see clean streets, flowers, and welcoming people – it’s a constantly expanding canton, with a rare combination of decent urban infrastructure, strong traditions, and a clean, small-town air.
– Agrotourism & ecotourism – The countryside is rich in coffee plantations, mountainous landscapes and diverse microclimates. More and more tourists are looking for authentic experiences: ecological cabinas, coffee tasting tours, guided nature walks, or accommodation on local farms.
– Education & vocational training – As a university city (hosting an extension of the Universidad de Costa Rica), there is demand for alternative courses, technical training, English language centers, and coworking spaces.
– Real Estate – Many families are looking to retreat from the capital to quieter areas. There are opportunities for small residential projects or renting cabinas/homes to teachers, students, and tourists.
– Agriculture & handicrafts – San Ramón has a tradition in the production of high-quality coffee, vegetables and flowers. Cooperatives, collection centers, or stores that sell organic products directly from the producer can be developed.
– Health & wellness – Surrounding communities have limited access to specialized medical services. A small private health center, pharmacy, alternative therapy or wellness spa would be welcome.
– Small-scale technology – For those who work remotely or want to develop small tech startups, the area offers a quiet life, low costs and decent internet connection.
San Ramón is a more discreet gem in the province of Alajuela. Located about an hour from the capital and about the same distance from the beaches (Pacific), the canton attracts both locals and expats looking for a quieter place, but with all the essential services close by.
In the first 5 months of 2025, 198 crimes were registered in the canton of San Ramón.
The most common are simple thefts and robberies, but there is also a lack of burglaries and vehicle thefts.
Official data from the OIJ shows:
🟡 Note: although the atmosphere is calmer than in Alajuela, peace should not be confused with total safety. Central areas, bus stations and crowded parking lots can attract pickpockets or opportunists. In high-risk areas, it is best to avoid traveling at night and not leave things in plain sight in your car. Calm caution, without paranoia — but neither is naivety.
San Ramón is for more settled souls. If you don’t like the hustle and bustle of the city and want a place with good coffee, green hills and people who say “buenos días” to you with a smile, this is the place. It always gave me the feeling of a big village, where life flows a little slower. At the same time, the university and cultural activities make it not cut off from the world.
