The province of Limón is one of Costa Rica’s seven provinces and is likely the most culturally distinct.
For many tourists, it is synonymous with tropical beaches and lush rainforests, but for those who live here, Limón is a province with a special character, where natural beauty coexists with economic and social challenges.
Located on the Caribbean coast, the province borders Nicaragua and Panama, and is the only region in the country that faces exclusively the Caribbean Sea.
It is the third-largest province and comprises a total of 6 cantons and 30 districts.
The city of Limón, the provincial capital, is Costa Rica’s main port on the Caribbean Sea and one of the country’s most important commercial centers. It is also here that the influence of Afro-Caribbean culture is most evident, as seen in the local cuisine, music, and traditions.

Is Limón safe? It depends on the area!
Limón Province is one of the most beautiful in Costa Rica, but it’s also one that requires extra caution when choosing where to go or where to stay.
Tourist areas such as Puerto Viejo, Cahuita, and Tortuguero welcome hundreds of thousands of tourists every year and, in general, can be explored without any problems as long as you follow basic common-sense guidelines.
In contrast, in the city of Limón and in certain neighborhoods or port areas, the crime rate is higher than in many other provinces. The most common incidents are opportunistic thefts and muggings, which mainly occur in the busiest urban areas.
This does not mean that the entire province is unsafe. Limón is very diverse, and the difference between a quiet town, a tourist area, and a troubled neighborhood can be enormous.
As in any part of Costa Rica, it’s recommended that you do not leave valuables in plain sight, avoid unnecessary travel through unfamiliar areas after dark, and do your research thoroughly before renting accommodations or visiting lesser-known neighborhoods.

If you choose your location carefully and follow standard safety precautions, Limón can be an extraordinary province to explore or even to live in.
It’s not a place to avoid, but it is one of the provinces where doing your research and choosing the right area is more important than in others.
In the more than 20 years I’ve spent in Costa Rica, I’ve visited the province of Limón several times. Each time, I’ve had the same impression: it’s one of the most beautiful regions in the country, but also one of the most misunderstood.
Yes, there are areas with problems and a higher crime rate than in other provinces. It would be a mistake to deny that. But it’s just as wrong to judge the entire province based on a few neighborhoods or some statistics.
Limón is synonymous with welcoming people, a unique culture, magnificent beaches, tropical rainforests, and breathtaking nature. If you do your research beforehand and carefully choose the places you’ll visit or where you want to live, you’ll discover an authentic province unlike any other region in Costa Rica.
