Price comparison Romania vs Costa Rica. When analyzing the economic dynamics between Eastern Europe and Central America, the general tendency is to evaluate only macroeconomic indicators global or tourism potential. However, true purchasing power and quality of life are most accurately reflected in daily behavior at the shelf.
Based on data collected directly from retail networks in both countries (using the local calculation parity of 100 colones for 1 RON), we can observe a series of highly nuanced structural paradoxes between the Romanian and Costa Rican markets.
We have gathered prices for a list of basic and commonly used products, from two sources:
- Costa Rica: Maxipali (one of the largest supermarket chains in the country, focused on affordable prices)
- Romania: Auchan for regular products, and eMag for some “premium” or harder-to-find products on the shelf (quality coffee, certain imported detergents)
Prices in Costa Rica were converted to RON using the average colón–leu exchange rate calculated over the last month, not the official exchange rate of the day — this is to avoid a day with high fluctuation distorting the comparison.
Important to note: The products we choose for Costa Rica are the ones we actually use, not necessarily the cheapest options available on the market. We prefer brands with reasonable quality, not necessarily luxury, but with a manufacturer’s guarantee — not name-brand goods, where you have no certainty about the quality or origin of the product.
So, the Costa Rica prices below don’t represent “the cheapest possible,” but what we consider to be reliable value for money. We’re not making a blanket conclusion like “it’s cheaper in X” — the reality is in categories, as you can see below.
Basic products

| Product | Romania (RON) | Costa Rica (RON) |

The difference in coffee is most striking: in Romania, Tirrazú (a Costa Rican brand, therefore “imported” there) costs almost triple the price in Costa Rica.

As a landlocked country on two coasts, Costa Rica has a clear advantage here, especially in octopus and salmon.

| Antiperspirant Gillette Power Rush (82g) | 42.45 | 42.00 |
In cosmetics/personal care, the differences are much smaller — except for Pantene shampoo, where the ratio is reversed compared to the rest of the list: in Costa Rica it is almost double that of Romania.
Utilities: water and electricity
| Trance | ₡/m³ | RON/m³ | Subscription (RON) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–15 m³ | 307.00 | 3.07 | 2.6 |
| 16–30 m³ | 362.00 | 3.62 | 2.6 |
| 31–60 m³ | 437.00 | 4.37 | 2.6 |
| Over 61 m³ | 531.00 | 5.31 | 2.6 |
In Romania, the national average tariff for water + sewage (excluding VAT) is approximately 15.81 lei/m³ (~1,581 ₡/m³) — with large differences between regions: below 10-12 lei/m³ (~1,000-1,200 ₡) in the most accessible areas (Prahova, Bucharest), and above 21 lei/m³ (~2,100 ₡) in counties such as Vaslui or Iași.
| Trance | ₡/kWh | RON/kWh | Subscription (RON) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0–140 kWh | 56.14 | 0.56 | 11.47 |
| 141–195 kWh | 63.47 | 0.63 | 21.64 |
| 196–250 kWh | 73.79 | 0.74 | 32.08 |
| 251–370 kWh | 85.78 | 0.86 | 39.43 |
| Over 371 kWh | 99.70 | 1.00 | 79.24 |
In Romania, after the removal of the price cap in July 2025, the free market reached approximately 1.20–1.80 lei/kWh with VAT included (~120-180 ₡/kWh), without a separate “cargo fijo” visible on the invoice like in Costa Rica — the fixed cost is integrated into the distribution and transmission components.
A concrete example, from my own experience: a household with a gas stove and electric oven (3 pieces, one used constantly), electric shower, refrigerator, bread maker, and an active electronics workshop in the house ends up with a monthly bill of approximately ₡15,000 — proof that, in Costa Rica, even above-average electricity consumption remains reasonable.
For both utilities, the difference is clear and consistent: in Costa Rica you pay much less per unit, especially if you fall into the basic consumption brackets. However, in Costa Rica utilities operate on strict progressive brackets, so high consumption (air conditioning, electric boiler) can quickly increase the bill towards the final brackets.
Here too, the joke is not far from reality. At the beginning of September 2026:
| Fuel | Costa Rica (₡/L) | Costa Rica (RON/L) | Romania (RON/L) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Regular/Plus 91 gasoline | 758 | 7.58 | 9.57 |
| Premium gasoline | 704 | 7.04 | 10.12 |
| Diesel 50 standard | 606 | 6.06 | 10.11 |
| Diesel premium | - | - | 10.93 |
| Kerosene (kerosene) | 540 | 5.40 | ~15.73 |
Important: The above Costa Rican RECOPE prices are the official ones, at gas stations (final price with single tax and margins included), and are adjusted monthly according to international quotes and exchange rates; those in Romania vary daily from one gas station to another — the figures above are a snapshot, not a constant.
Costa Rica does not have a single minimum wage, but a system based on occupational categories (Decree of Minimum Wages, updated periodically). In Costa Rica, the employee pays a mandatory contribution of ~10.83% (CCSS + Banco Popular) of the gross salary, and below the threshold of ₡918,000/month (2026) no income tax is paid at all. All the categories below are below this threshold:
| Occupational category | Brut (₡) | Contributions (~10.83%) | Net (₡) | Net (RON) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Domestic work (housekeeping) | 268,731.31 | 29,102 | 239,629 | 2,396.29 |
| Unskilled | 373,092.30 | 40,406 | 332,686 | 3,326.86 |
| semiskilled | 405,710.70 | 43,938 | 361,772 | 3,617.72 |
| Qualified | 419,755.80 | 45,460 | 374,296 | 3,742.96 |
| Specialized | 487,335.00 | 52,778 | 434,557 | 4,345.57 |
| Intermediate technicians (diversified education) | 496,838.17 | 53,807 | 443,031 | 4,430.31 |
| Higher education technicians | 542,096.58 | 58,709 | 483,388 | 4,833.88 |
| Higher education graduates | 585,484.58 | 63,408 | 522,077 | 5,220.77 |
| University baccalaureate | 664,078.07 | 71,919 | 592,159 | 5,921.59 |
| University graduate | 796,921.00 | 86,307 | 710,614 | 7,106.14 |
Romania has a single gross minimum wage per economy: 4,325 lei/month (from July 1, 2026), equivalent to approximately 2,699 lei net in hand. As a benchmark, the net minimum wage in Romania is between the “Domestic Work (Housekeeping)” and “Unskilled” categories in Costa Rica, well below the “Specialized” threshold and much below that of technicians or higher education graduates.
On the net, the difference becomes even more visible: the 2,699 lei net in Romania (~₡269,900) is a bit above the net “Domestic Work” in Costa Rica (₡239,629, or ~2,396.29 RON), but remains below all other occupational categories — including “Unskilled” (₡332,686, or ~3,326.86 RON).
